Tour of the Midwest

Let's see...Memphis, Indianapolis, Goshen, Clare (MI), Chicago, and then Fayetteville (AR). We managed to make it to all these places in about 10 days. We saw many friends and family along the way!

In a nutshell, Scott drove the truck up north with TJ, so that he could bring back some furniture from Chicago. Luka, Mikayla, and I flew, as I just didn't want to deal with a nursing baby while traveling. So, after a night of fireworks in Memphis, Scott and TJ picked the rest of us up in Louisville on the way to Indianapolis to visit the Kandel Ciso gang.

We headed to Goshen the next day to spend time with Grandma and Grandpa Schmucker and Great Grandma and Grandpa Garber. Here is a picture of Great-Grandma telling a story about "when she was a little girl." TJ and Luka just love to hear stories about when we were growing up, and typically they like them to be either when we got in trouble, or when we were scared. I keep trying to tell him that "Mommy didn't get in trouble," but he must not really believe me!

On the way to Michigan, we made a quick stop for lunch at Bob and Mary Birkey's house. It's always good to see such long-time friends!

We made it to Clare on Friday evening for the main focus of our trip, which was for my cousin Phillip's wedding (Lamar and Cathy's son.) The kids had a ball at the wedding, and for the first time I think will actually now understand what a wedding is. However, after a round of introductions at the rehearsal dinner on Friday night, Luka asked, "Are they married now?" We had some explaining to do for the rest of the weekend.

Mimi took Norah to the wedding (Angie and Seth enjoyed a few quiet days at home with Macy) and so the cousins had a lot of fun together. They even had a sleepover one night in Mimi and Papa's room. TJ and Norah were "slow dancing" at the wedding.

We got a picture of all the cousins that were there except for the bride and groom.

The next day I think was the highlight of the trip for the boys. We headed out to Lamar and Cathy's farm, where much fun was had by all. The day included a hay ride, four wheeler rides, raspberry picking, climbing hay bales, and some very creative ways of pulling a radio flyer wagon! Luka also made a special bond with cousin Anne who was so fun to play with! All weekend long they would call each other "Dirty Monkeys." Luka got really attached to Uncle Clayt as well!

After the wedding, we landed in Chicago on Monday evening for a crazy day of laundry and packing up the furniture. I think the adults got to bed by midnight. I got up at 5:30 the next morning to catch a flight to Fayetteville to spend time with the Rutledge Clan. Scott and TJ got there late that evening after a full day's drive. They have baby Allen who is two weeks younger than Mikayla. The kids had a ball, and so did the adults, staying up way too late both nights!

As a side note, TJ was a great travelling companion for Scott. He was very content to sit in the back on the truck, watch his videos, work on his math sheets, and listen to his iShuffle. (Brother!) At one point he asked Scott "Daddy, how much further?" Scott replied, "about 4 hours." TJ's response was a happy "OK!" with no complaints at all.

As for Luka, he is our little talker. He is constantly asking questions during stories and always has new questions or comments about anything and everything. To his credit, he is a smart little kid, and never ceases to amaze us with all the new concepts his little brain is trying to process. With that said, when he is in the room, silence is NOT and option. So, on the way to get groceries, after traveling all day from Fayetteville and then home, Luka said to me, "Oh, geez! I talked so much on the airplane and in the van on the way from the airport that I'm done talking." Peace at last!
