School Update

The kids love school.  Even when we pick them up at 5:00 after a full day, they do not want to go home.  They really like their teachers and seem to enjoy their schoolwork, and they love to talk about their projects that they bring home each night.

We were curious to see how TJ would do in kindergarten.  There are a few kids in his class that have been reading since they were 4 years old.  TJ is not reading at all, but is definitely showing an interest and attempts to read.  Mostly, he quickly memorizes the little books and calls it "reading," but it is a start.  So far, the school has been very impressed with his ability to focus and finish his assignments, whereas most of the other kids really just want to play.  (Guess he got those Type A traits honestly from both of us.  :=)  Some of the older kids read to him, and so he is helping him to gain interest in learning to read as well.

Luka talks about his space shuttles at school:

Luka - "If you are on the purple shuttle, you get two stars.  If you are on the green shuttle, you get 1 star.  If you are on the red shuttle, you get none stars." 
Me - "Luka, what shuttle are you on?" 
Luka -"I'm always on the green." 
Me - "Why are you not on the purple?" 
Luka - "I don't know.  They just always put me on the green."

Hmmm...something is not overly effective here...we'll have to work on that.

I cannot believe the volume ofstuff they bring home each day.  We go through several art projects and assignments, and I know they keep stuff at the school to compile a portfolio at the end of the semester as well.  TJ especially seems to enjoy the science projects they do in the after-school care.  They made a mini-marshmallow popper the other day, and he was just thrilled.  On a separate note, he also is ready to sit down and begin writing in his journal each morning, which is the first thing they always do.

So glad to have a place for the kids that they enjoy so much!
