Off to the hill country...our favorite part of Texas! We had to hit up the Kerrville Folk Festival. We have fond memories of hanging with friends and chillin' out to some folksy tunes. Koyote Ranch is our lodging of choice, just a few miles away. We stay in a cabin with only enough room for two single beds, a narrow bunk bed, and a pack-n-play, which barely fit between the two beds. But it is a roof and not a tent and has very cold A/C!
Mikayla can party like a rock star, so we knew the late evening would phase her. She literally ran around for 4 hours straight, not missing a beat, and had the time of her life. Of course, she insisted on having her shirt off like the boys, even after I had actually convinced her to wear a cute little summer dress. Oh well!
TJ definitely had on his I'm Not A Little Kid Anymore
attitude. And he brought his hungry stomach with him too. Scott bought
him a big-ole BBQ sandwich thinking "I'll just eat whatever is left for my dinner." Seriously, TJ handed two bites of bread to Scott and said, "here Dad, you can have the rest."
Luka found entertainment by running around with Mikayla and the other toddlers, and "taking care of them." He soon found the face painting booth, looked at it a couple of times in the mirror, and promptly came back and said, "What else is there here for kids?" Well son, sit down on the blanket and listen to the music, and have another juice box. A huge wrestling match then broke out with tons of giggles. Luka was the first one to "lose it" at about 11:00, so we had to head out soon after that.
I'm not sure Mikayla was even buckled in the van yet by the time she fell asleep. We all hit the hay pretty quickly and didn't wake up until after 8:00.
Later that day, we hit another favorite spot, the Medina swimming hole. With the hot sun blazing down, there is nothing like a dip in the cool river. There were rope swings to explore, dams to build, and rocks to skip.
During nap time, we drove back toward San Antonio to meet up with good friends the Bonniwells, who moved to Denver a year ago. We all had a great reunion, lots more swimming, kayaking, and preparation for a big day at Schlitterbahn (a ginormous water park) the next day, which everyone was very much anticipating. The boys have very fond memories of that from last year, and in fact have been talking about it the entire past year, asking when we can go again.
That night, we hit Chick-fil-A for a quick meal, but Mikayla feel asleep before we could even get back to our place to eat it. She had hardly eaten all day, so I woke her up, and sure enough, she ate those chicken nuggets like a champ! Luka ate the whole bag of grapes! I think in those situations, the kids just get so excited that they almost forget that they are hungry until it really hits them!
We hit one of our favorite BBQ spots, Rudy's for one last rendez-vous before heading back home. So good to be with good friends again!
That night, Mikayla was in her pack-n-play with a blanket draped over it to block out some of the light. But, she would not go to sleep after her little cat nap. She was singing to herself, telling herself stories, etc. No one else was talking, and Scott and I were getting ready for bed. Scott headed to the bathroom, without saying a word. Before he was even done, she stopped in the middle of her song and yelled out of the blue, "Daddy, flush!" Her situational awareness is a bit amazing to me.
All in all, a pretty good vacay, but a tiring one none-the-less. Everyone conked out in the car on the way home, and I even slept pretty hard for an hour!
