Grady McFuzz

Luka had a moment to shine this year when he was picked out of all the 2nd grade classes to be the lead in the 2nd grade play, Grady McFuzz.  Grady was a bird who couldn't sing, dance or fly like the other birds, and his feathers weren't pretty yet like the other birds either.  Well, for this special role, he needed a special costume, and Mimi, now in retirement, decided she was up to the task!

It's amazing the show they can put on with only a few short practices.  The music teacher, Mrs. Chapman, does a great job organizing it all, necessary since she only has each 2nd grade class about 3 times per month.  I'm not even sure they ran all the way through the play before performing it!  In any case, Luka's lines were memorized a month in advance, and he took his role very seriously, no doubt.

While the songs and show itself were a lot of work, so was the costume!  Hopefully Mimi feels like it is worth it, because he certainly wore that costume with pride.  There were feathers to be attached throughout the play as Grady's feathers slowly started to mature, and in the end he turned from a plain brown bird to a beautiful colorful bird, thanks to Mimi!

There were two performances, one in the morning and one in the evening, so for all the work of the costumes, he at least got to wear them twice.  Luka was very excited that he had a mic all of his own, and he had to turn it on and off throughout the play...not an especially easy task for a 2nd grader, but certainly a bonus for the star of the show.

Songs included: Zippitee Doo Dah, Don't Worry Be Happy, Bluebird, Des Colores (in spanish) and another one in sign language.  Really love how Ms. Chapman incorporates different languages into almost all her shows!
