We have a new addition to our family! Last week, as I was standing in the rain on a street corner in Atlanta, headed to a client meeting, my cell phone rang. It was Scott, wondering how I might feel about getting a dog. He was pretty excited about one he had just found on the Schnauzer Rescue website. Twenty minutes after submitting an application, the foster dog parent had called him, saying we were approved and when would we like to meet Saxon?
Needless to say, the next evening, we were headed downtown to visit the dog. While the foster dog parent had Saxon for 5 weeks, and could attest to his mild demeanor, the one critical unknown was how he would react to little kids. (The only thing they knew about him is that he had been found in a parking lot, so his history will forever be a mystery.) Well, as soon as we got there, Mikayla pretty much bombarded him with petting and saying "Doggie! Doggie! Doggie!" about 50 times, and he reacted very well. So, we drove him home that night.
We did not hear him bark for the first 24 hours. I took him on a walk, and he did not bark at any of the other dogs. He has chased a few squirrels, and we have determined that he needs some work on the leash, but other than that, he is so laid back you don't even know he is around. He has found his spot on the couch and prefers to lay there most of the day. We actually think he might be going through a bit of depression due to his transition, which would not be uncommon, but we are also curious to see what true personality might emerge. In the meantime, he is happy to cuddle and accepts all kisses and belly scratches.
