My Family Rocks!!!

The following blog was my entry in to a "My Family Rocks" contest put on by Rolling Stone magazine and Hyundai, with the prize being a brand new black Hyundai Santa Fe complete with a custom flame job (it looks so sweet!), an all-expense paid trip to L.A. for the 55th Grammy Awards, and a photoshoot in Rolling Stone.  I couldn't pass this opportunity up and made it a special project to get our family submitted in time to win!! Hi.  My name is Scott, married and father of three, and I'm pretty much the leader of our band, the Scolisa Clan.  Actually, I need to modify that a little... my wife Lisa is also a leader in the band, hence the name.  You could say we're kind of a Jagger/Richards or a Tyler/Perry combo, each with our specific strengths, except we get along better.  All I can say is that it's worked for 15 years with no end in sight.  As a crew, we love to work hard, play hard, laugh hard and rock hard in Houston, TX.

I'm a 43 year-old pilot for a major airline, a drummer, a runner, and a home-brewer.  My 38 year-old wife is a full-time mom with a part-time gig as a benefits consultant who loves to work out, read, and get crafty.  Together we have three kids who love to rock:  TJ (the DJ) age 7, loves to spin tunes and to play basketball.  Luka, age 6, has a passion for the keyboards and swimming.  2 year-old Mikayla, well, let's just say that she loves to dance and groove to her two older brothers' music.  Speaking of music, and rock and roll in particular, our crew is so much into the idea of rocking that we decided to dedicate our entire garage to it.  As you can see in the photo, we love our garage, and it is my dream that several new bands will begin to sprout here in the next few years.  I've affectionately named it The S.P.o.T. after WAR's song Southern Part of Texas.  We all love to rock out together in The S.P.o.T. with a six-speaker stereo system, two 2500-watt DMX controlled light towers and enough additional firepower to make any local club jealous.  It's a hit with our neighbors and friends, and I'm constantly playing new music found on my never-ending quest for independent record shops around the country on my layovers.  As we like to say, "Make the Woodlands (our suburb) Weird!"

We love to Rock, but we also love to Roll.  We're a family constantly on the move.  Swings, a trampoline, a jungle gym and a zip-line are favorites in the back yard.  As you can also see in the picture, we have many modes of getting around, including bikes, trikes, scooters, wheel shoes, a wagon, I mean, just name it and we probably ride it.  Between work, school, sporting events, errands, social events including birthday parties, camps, music lessons and frequent trips to the local YMCA we know our way around the neighborhoods of our community pretty well.

My wife and I were raised in tight knit, service-oriented families, and even though we are constantly on the move, we are still able to make time to impart these values to our children.  Our projects this past year were many, but some of the highlights were adopting a two-mile stretch of trail that runs behind our house, setting up a Kool-aid station and donating the profits to the local animal shelter, organizing a used shoe drive for underprivileged kids at a local community center and rescuing and adopting our new best friend, a 2 year-old dog named Saxon.  We also just adopted a low-income family for Christmas this year.  My awesome wife somehow even finds time to be the room mom for Luka's kindergarten class.

500 words just ain't enough!  But thanks for reading.  As a lifetime subscriber to Rolling Stone, I've read countless incredible articles and look forward to countless more.  Thank you specifically for the words regarding having kids and starting a new band!  Those are my thoughts about my family and those words literally sum it up for us.  May the most rockingest family win!  Peace out!
