Colorado - Chapter 2

Friday morning, we headed from Breck to Glenwood Springs.  Another "must do" was the hike to Hanging Lake.  We didn't know exactly what we were in for; based on reviews, it seemed that it might be a bit strenuous with the kids, especially knowing we would be carrying Mikayla.

Well, it was strenuous...and I think between Scott and I, Mikayla was carried 80% of the way.  This is a 1 mile hike each way, and ascends about 1,000 ft.  Very rocky and treacherous, but Scott and I were bound and determined.  At first, the boys were complaining a lot, but after a little chat, they too found their groove, and really got into it.  Despite the heavy tourist traffic, it was worth it, and WE DID IT!  (With that said, not sure I would do it again with a 4-yr. old.)

That evening, we treated ourselves to the Glenwood Springs pool; after all, how can you go to Glenwood Springs without a trip to the hot springs for which it is known?  This was a highlight for Mikayla; before leaving for Colorado, she asked us over and over, "Mom, does Colorado have swimming pools?"  She is loving swimming, and couldn't wait to swim in Colorado!

The next day was very memorable as well as we visited Glenwood Caverns, an amusement park on the top of the mountain.  The only way to get there is via Gondola, so we a got hotel that was right at the bottom of the gondola, for easy access.  Once again, we lucked out with the crowds, and a lot of the rides didn't have any lines at all.  The favorite for everyone was the famous alpine coaster, which twists and turns down the side of the mountain 3,400.  The best part was that Mikayla could go with us as well, and she LOVED it.  Every member of this family loves roller coasters, that is for certain.  I think we honestly each went about 10 times.  We shut the park down, literally, and enjoyed our sunset view on the way back down in the gondola.

We also visited the caves, which is the cause for the origin of the amusement park.  We learned all about stalactites, cave bacon, and soda straws!  It was very impressive and we all enjoyed this adventure.  It got us out of the heat a bit too as the caves are 55 degrees year-round.

The next day, we headed back to the north eastern part of the state to Estes Park, via Rocky Mountain National Park.  We took the infamous Trail Ridge Road, which winds you up and through the park to 12,000 ft.  It was freezing, literally, but we had to get out a snap a photo.  The views were breathtaking.  We saw a moose, deer, and lots of other wildlife along the trail...but no bears!
