TJ had surgery 6 days ago, and in many ways it feels much longer, considering all the phases it seems we have been through, but the BLOT is that TJ is now practically running in his casts! We had to keep him off his feet the first several days, and tell him he was not allowed to walk. Carrying a 4-year old with what feels like a 5 lb. cast on each leg wasn't exactly a pleasure, but it was our reality. He experienced quite a bit of pain and discomfort, and in fact on Wednesday we took him in to have his casts split and expanded a bit, which really seemed to almost eliminate his discomfort. TJ seemed only to be comfortable with his legs propped up, so we made a spot for him on the couch and he managed to watch many movies. (Truly, it was at times the only way to distract him enough about the pain, so we obliged.)
On Wednesday night, he started running a fever, so more calls to the doctor, and we decided to give it 24 hours and monitor it closely. The fever did actually disappear by thursday night (phew) and he seemed to be in really good spirits. We put his walking shoes on his casts, and he seemed just thrilled at the prospect of walking again.
Friday, we took him into school for a few hours, in a stroller, and I think he was really glad to be back. The owner of the school presented him with this massive fruit bouquet, and everyone made him feel very special indeed upon his return. Friday evening we practiced walking a bit more, and by the end of the night, he was going anywhere and doing almost everything he wanted to do. He has his freedom back, and we expect to be back full-time with school this week and back in the groove. Yeah TJ!
